Former Member of Parliament Udaya Gammanpila stated on Monday that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake acted with criminal negligence regarding a disaster recently accused of claiming over 600 lives. He also promised to take legal action against the President after he leaves office.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Gammanpila stated that criminal charges would be filed against Mr. Dissanayake after his presidential term ends in 2029. He further alleged that the magnitude of this tragedy was a result of negligence at the highest level of government.

Mr. Gammanpila stated, 'After you step down from the presidency in 2029, we will, without hesitation, prosecute you for criminal negligence.' He also mentioned that evidence to substantiate these charges has already been collected.

Mr. Gammanpila stated that the maximum penalty under the law for such an offense is five years imprisonment. He emphasized that due to the severity of the damage caused, they would seek the maximum sentence.
