A serious accusation made on social media that worm-infested food was served to guests at a wedding held at the Avenra Garden Hotel, a 4-star hotel located in the Negombo area, and the hotel management's response to it, have now created a strong discussion. It was reported that in the food served at this wedding held on December 13th,
worms were present, and actress Nuwangi Liyanage released a video stating that the hotel's chefs were responsible for it. She emphasized that she possesses relevant evidence and is not afraid of any legal action. However, responding to these allegations, the Avenra Hotel management issued a special statement saying that this was a false propaganda campaign carried out without any factual basis, merely by showing a mobile phone photograph.
They point out that this smear campaign has been launched with the intention of damaging the institution's reputation, without filing a complaint with any responsible authority or officially at the time of the incident. The statement further adds that complaints have been lodged with the Katana Police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) against the parties involved in this process, and legal action has been initiated.
Billionaire businessman Danesh de Silva, the owner of the hotel, also released a video message stating that this was an organized conspiracy launched to bring down reputable businesses like his. He strongly asserted that he suspects the accusers themselves may have put worms in the food to create this video, and that legal action will be taken against them.
Coinciding with this controversial incident, news has also been reported that many guests who attended parties at the Avenra Hotel during the first week of December fell ill due to food poisoning. Specifically, groups from the Negombo and Kiribathgoda areas who attended events on December 04 and 07 were hospitalized and received inpatient treatment due to vomiting and abdominal discomfort. The statement issued by the hotel management has acknowledged that these illnesses were reported to them and stated that an immediate internal investigation was launched, and Public Health Inspectors (PHI) in the area were informed.
This is not the first time issues have arisen regarding food safety and hygiene at the Avenra Hotel.
In December 2023, Public Health Inspectors sealed the hotel's kitchen due to its highly unsanitary conditions. Unhygienic practices such as the use of expired water bottles and storing cooked food and raw meat/fish in the same refrigerators were observed.
Previously, in October 2023, when a similar offense was investigated, there were pressures not to prosecute, and at that time, stern warnings were issued, and unsuitable food was destroyed, as revealed earlier by Mr. Upul Rohana, President of the Public Health Inspectors' Association. It is also reported that when the case filed by the Katana Public Health Inspectors regarding this matter was called on the 9th, the hotel owners evaded court.
