A fifteen-year-old schoolboy, who was behaving suspiciously disguised as a woman and wearing a burqa near a shopping complex in the heart of Bandarawela town, was arrested by Bandarawela Police on the evening of the 9th. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the arrested student is a resident of Eththalapitiya, Bandarawela, and attends a prominent school in the town.
Police stated that this student, who studies drama and performing arts at school, has participated in Bharatanatyam performances representing the school, and has been costumed and performed female roles on several occasions. As the student's mother and father are working abroad, he resides with his sister at his grandmother's house,
and his grandmother works as a school psychology teacher.
During questioning, the student revealed that he had purchased the burqa about a month ago using money sent by his mother, who is working abroad. Driven by a desire to wear a burqa, he told the police that when his sister left home to attend tuition classes, he took her clothes, shoes, and cosmetics, dressed up in them at a secluded spot in the city, and then wandered around the town. The suspect was scheduled to be produced before the Bandarawela Magistrate's Court yesterday (10).
