Due to the severe flood situation caused by the overflowing Mahaweli River, Peradeniya University has suffered extensive property damage, estimated at approximately Rs. 300 million, stated the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Terrence Madhujith. The Vice-Chancellor pointed out that the flood has destroyed numerous computer systems, electronic equipment, research data storage devices, and valuable furniture at the university.
Specifically, the Faculties of Management, Agriculture, and Veterinary Medicine have been severely impacted by this disaster, with research equipment and electronic devices worth millions of rupees in these faculties being destroyed. The Vice-Chancellor further stated that the damage to the University Computer Centre alone is close to Rs. 60 million, and additionally, electrical equipment from the maintenance unit, sports goods, and several large plastic water tanks were swept away by the floodwaters.
Professor Terrence Madhujith emphasized that the assessment of the total damage is currently underway, and restoring the university to its former state after this devastation poses a significant challenge. However, he added that cleaning efforts are being expedited to remove the layers of mud and debris covering the university premises, and he is confident that academic activities can resume by next week.
