The Disaster Management Centre reports that the number of deaths due to the disaster situation affecting the island caused by Cyclone Ditwa has risen to 638 by yesterday (28) afternoon. The centre also states that 175 people are still missing.




Mr. Pradeep Kodippili, Media Director and Spokesperson for the Disaster Management Centre, stated that 499,671 people belonging to 149,460 families are still affected by this disaster situation.

Meanwhile, he further stated that 76,801 people from 10,340 families are still staying in 358 safe locations due to the disaster. Additionally, Mr. Kodippili mentioned that 267,700 people from another 76,801 families have sought shelter with relatives, friends, or in other places.




The highest number of deaths from the disaster has been reported from the Kandy District, where 241 people have died and 69 are missing.

89 deaths and 10 disappearances have been reported from the Badulla District, while 80 deaths and 33 disappearances have been reported from the Nuwara Eliya District.



Furthermore, due to this disaster situation, 6,121 houses have been completely destroyed, and another 114,314 houses have been partially damaged.
