Police state that no suspicious objects or information were found during the emergency search operations conducted yesterday (29) based on email messages received regarding bomb threats to the Nawalapitiya and Poojapitiya Divisional Secretariats. Investigations have revealed that the threat received by the Poojapitiya Divisional Secretariat was false.

A message received by the general email account of the Nawalapitiya Pasgama Korale Divisional Secretariat warned that there was a bomb in its storage room. The message informed Ms. Ramza Jayasundara, the Divisional Secretary of Nawalapitiya Pasgama Korale, that there was a bomb inside a tent sent from a foreign country and that it would explode yesterday (29) at 2:00 PM. The Divisional Secretary immediately acted, evacuating the office staff and those present, and informed the security forces.

Accordingly, with the assistance of the Nawalapitiya Police, the Police Special Task Force, the Army Bomb Disposal Unit, and the Police Canine Unit, it was confirmed that there was nothing suspicious after inspecting the Divisional Secretariat premises, especially the storage room. Kandy District Member of Parliament, Ms. Thushari Jayasinghe, immediately arrived at the scene upon learning of the incident and confirmed that this search was conducted based on an email message received by the Divisional Secretariat.

Meanwhile, the Poojapitiya Divisional Secretariat also received an electronic message yesterday (29) stating that a terrorist attack would occur, which investigations by the Poojapitiya Police revealed to be false. A senior police officer stated that special police protection has been deployed to the Divisional Secretariat. He added that the message, sent from an email address dated the day before yesterday (28), indicated a potential terrorist attack and instructed officers to evacuate before 2:00 PM yesterday (29). The officer further stated that although the message was received on the 28th, it was a holiday, so an officer only saw it yesterday (29).

Following a complaint made to the police yesterday (29) by an officer on the instructions of the Divisional Secretary, the police immediately acted, evacuating all staff and deploying the Police Special Task Force, the Bomb Disposal Unit, and police dogs to launch a special search operation. The senior police officer further stated that no suspicious objects were found during this operation, which lasted for nearly four hours. Further investigations into this matter are being conducted under the instructions of Chief Police Inspector K.M.R.S. Konara, the OIC of Poojapitiya Police.
