A temporary state of unrest occurred in the Buwelikada area due to two elephants, who were part of a procession carrying rice from Pallekele for the Aluth Sahal Mangalya (New Rice Festival) of the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic), becoming agitated. This incident caused a minor commotion among the public present at the procession.
The main reason for this unrest was another elephant attempting to attack Thai Raja Pulathisi Raja, an elephant belonging to the elephant troupe of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, who was participating in the procession.
However, following the incident, the two agitated elephants were brought back under control due to the prompt intervention of the mahouts (elephant keepers). This prevented further problems from arising.
