Mother and Son Assault Police in Maharagama After Being Asked to Lower Speaker Volume

 A woman and her son have been arrested by Maharagama Police for assaulting a police sergeant who had instructed them to lower the volume of a loudspeaker. The police sergeant, who was injured in the assault, has been admitted to Kalubowila Teaching Hospital for treatment.



The Police Emergency Call Unit (119) had received a complaint that a woman near a bookshop in the Maharagama area was singing songs and collecting money while emitting excessive noise from a loudspeaker. Police stated that the officer who went to the location to investigate the complaint instructed the woman to reduce the volume, at which point she verbally abused the officer and tugged at his uniform, causing harassment.




Subsequently, while the police officer was walking towards the pedestrian crossing, the woman and the person identified as her son jointly assaulted the officer, causing injuries. The police sergeant involved in this incident was Sergeant Shanta (56124), attached to the Maharagama Police.

The arrested suspect woman is a 58-year-old resident of Rukmalgama Road, Kottawa, while the 27-year-old suspect man is a resident of Pitipana South, Homagama. Maharagama Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
