A member of the Puttalam Pradeshiya Sabha, representing the National People's Power (NPP), has been arrested today (26) by Mundalama Police on charges of verbally abusing and issuing death threats to a female Grama Niladhari (village officer). The arrested member is Wimal Rohana, who represents the Mangalaeliya division of the Puttalam Pradeshiya Sabha.
Police state that on the 5th of last month, while the Mangalaeliya Grama Niladhari was traveling by motorcycle for disaster relief duties, she was involved in an accident with a small lorry driven by the suspect member. At that time, the member allegedly verbally abused and threatened her. The complaint filed by the Grama Niladhari states that the suspect threatened her with obscene language, claiming he was a Pradeshiya Sabha member and that the Grama Niladhari position was irrelevant to him, and that he would not allow her to perform her duties within the relevant Grama Niladhari division.
Although the Mundalama Divisional Secretary intervened and attempted to reconcile the two parties regarding this incident, the Grama Niladhari states that the member threatened her again over the phone on the 8th. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the member issued the second threat based on an incident involving the distribution of drinking water to disaster victims and inquiring about the non-provision of water to his own house. The suspect member was arrested this morning when he arrived at the Mundalama Police Station to give a statement regarding the complaint, and he is scheduled to be produced before the Puttalam Magistrate's Court.
