Opposition Badulla District MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake (NPP) stated in Parliament yesterday that a country-wide gas shortage could occur by next February due to the removal of the Omani company, which continuously supplied gas to Litro company for about 10 years, and the handover of the supply to a Swiss company.

The MP further stated that although the Cabinet had approved handing over the gas supply to another company from the first day of next month, agreements have not yet been signed, and the relevant company is currently presenting various conditions. He also emphasized that if the government acts irresponsibly, a gas shortage by next February cannot be prevented.

Responding to this, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, stated that it is a despicable act to scare the public by claiming there will be a gas shortage, and that there will be no gas shortage in the country whatsoever.

Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath announced that the first consignment of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) ordered from the Switzerland-based Geogas Trading company is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka on January 05th.

Speaking in Parliament, the Minister emphasized that there is no possibility of a gas shortage in the country, and the necessary agreements for this have already been signed.

This company, selected through an international competitive bidding process, managed to win the contract by proposing a price 15 cents lower than the next lowest bidder. Accordingly, the company has been awarded the contract to supply 380,000 metric tons of gas (20% less or more) to Litro Gas company during the year 2026.

Earlier, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Member of Parliament Chamara Sampath Dissanayake warned in Parliament that a gas shortage could occur from next year due to the Omani company OQ Gas, which previously supplied gas, losing the supply contract for the state-owned Litro Gas company.

Responding to this, the Foreign Minister stated that no issues would arise as the new company has agreed to comply with Sri Lankan standards, and since the relevant agreements have been signed, the new company's first vessel will arrive as scheduled on January 05th.

These gas consignments are expected to reach the island through Switzerland's Geogas Trading company, which sources its supplies from the United States of America.
