The Ministry of Transport has introduced a new online system to directly inform authorities about the condition of roads across the island. Through this new website, created jointly by the Road Development Authority and the Ministry of Transport's Digital Task Force, the public will have the opportunity to quickly report information regarding road obstructions, damage to roads, accidents, and locations where road repair work is underway.
It has been observed that currently, commonly used navigation apps in the country have a significant shortcoming in providing systematic and real-time updates on certain sudden incidents occurring on roads. Filling this gap is the primary objective of this new initiative, states Minister of Transport, Mr. Bimal Rathnayake. Accordingly, citizens can access this service by visiting the https://road-lk.org website, which is expected to build a more accurate and efficient road information network.
The functionality of this system relies entirely on information provided by road users, and
facilities have been provided to submit complaints in any language: Sinhala, Tamil, or English. It would be more effective if these reports could be submitted with photographs of the relevant location via https://road-lk.org/report. After the information submitted by the public is verified by Road Development Authority officials, steps will be taken to officially mark those locations on the national road map.
Although this system was initially developed due to the need to collect data on extensive damage caused to the road network by recent disaster situations, the Minister stated that it has been designed for long-term use. Currently, Provincial Road Development Authorities have also been granted the authority to update this system, and
in the future, plans are underway to provide traffic police and Divisional Secretaries with the opportunity to input road issues into the system.
This program, currently operating as a pilot project for several weeks, is expected to be extended to rural roads after its successful establishment covering national and provincial road networks. The Minister urges the public to actively contribute to confirming the success of this new digital platform before it is made a permanent service, and to report road issues.
