A station master of the Gampaha Headquarters Police Crime Division was arrested while accepting a bribe of two hundred and fifty thousand rupees, and the Colombo Magistrate's Court today (26) ordered him to be remanded until January 06 next year.

This suspect police officer was arrested during a raid conducted by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, based on a complaint made by a businessman from the Dandugama area in Ja-Ela.

The suspect station master had demanded three hundred thousand rupees and three-quarters of a sovereign of gold as a bribe to avoid taking legal action against the businessman for purchasing stolen gold items. He was arrested while accepting two hundred and fifty thousand rupees from that amount.

When the suspect was presented before Colombo Additional Magistrate Lahiru Warusawithana today, the Bribery Commission informed the court that investigations are still ongoing. Accordingly, the Magistrate ordered him to be remanded until the 6th of next month for further investigations.

The lawyer appearing for the suspect informed the court that his two children are scheduled to sit for the Advanced Level and Ordinary Level examinations this year. However, he further stated that a bail application would be submitted on a future date.
