The All Ceylon Bakery Owners' Association warns of a potential egg shortage in the country due to the damage caused to the animal husbandry sector by the severe cyclones and floods that affected Sri Lanka. Mr. N.K. Jayawardena, President of the association, points out that this could severely impact cake production, especially during the upcoming festive season.

Speaking at a press conference held recently (04) at the association's headquarters in Seeduwa, Raddolugama, he stated that,

approximately 3 million hens have died across the island due to the disaster. He also mentioned that egg prices in the market have already risen due to this sudden devastation.

Since about 25 percent of annual cake sales occur during the Christmas and 2026 New Year season, an egg shortage during that period would severely impact the industry.

The President emphasized that flour, sugar, eggs, and margarine are four essential ingredients for the bakery industry to operate, and in the face of an egg shortage, the prices of bakery products are bound to increase.

Considering this situation, Mr. Jayawardena also requested the government to take immediate steps to provide alternative solutions as a remedy for the egg shortage.
