According to an audit report issued by the National Audit Office, 77 tsunami towers constructed in 2009 to provide early warnings for tsunamis and cyclones are currently not operational. Although a contract was awarded to a private company in 2016 for an estimated sum of Rs. 134.7 million to repair these towers, the report reveals that none of the towers are operational even by the end of 2024.
The audit report points out that the reason for this inactive state is the violations of contractual conditions that occurred during the procurement process, as well as during the awarding and implementation of the contract. The Audit Office emphasizes that due to actions contrary to the agreement, none of these towers have been able to be operated to date.
The Disaster Management Centre (DMC), which has provided information to the audit regarding this matter, stated that these 77 towers, established across 14 districts, were constructed in 2009 as an early warning system for tsunami and wind conditions. However, the Disaster Management Centre further informed that due to their minimal functionality by 2016, a new agreement was entered into for the repair and maintenance of the towers.
This information is included in the audit report issued for the year 2024 concerning the Disaster Management Centre.
