Akshu Fernando, a talented cricketer who represented the Under-19 World Cup Cricket Tournament held in 2010, has passed away. Mr. Fernando, who was 34 years old at the time of his death, bid farewell to life while undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness.

A few years ago, on December 28, 2018, he faced an unfortunate accident at an unprotected railway crossing in the Mount Lavinia area. He sustained serious injuries due to this horrific accident, which occurred while he was returning after a physical fitness training session on the beach.

Akshu Fernando, who had been in a coma for nearly seven years since then, breathed his last yesterday (30). His cricket career, which was considered to be that of an extremely talented young player at the time, unfortunately came to an abrupt end with this sudden accident.

Akshu Fernando was a strong member of the Sri Lankan squad that participated in the Youth World Cup tournament held in New Zealand in 2010. Players like Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Danushka Gunathilaka, and Kithruwan Vithanage, who later represented the national team, were his teammates. Representing the Ragama Cricket Club, he showcased his talents in the domestic arena and was considered a promising player at the time.

International cricket commentator Roshan Abeysinghe has also confirmed this sad news and expressed his sorrow. Mr. Abeysinghe stated that Akshu Fernando was a wonderful young man who was very enthusiastic, friendly, and possessed gentlemanly qualities, and that this is a sad day for everyone who knew him.
