A monk and an individual have lost their lives in a horrific road accident when a moving car veered off the Ampara - Inginiyagala main road near Polwatta Junction and plunged into the main left bank canal of Senanayake Samudraya.

This accident occurred yesterday (28) around 7:00 PM. As the vehicle fell into the canal, local residents gathered at the scene and, with great effort, rescued those trapped inside the car and admitted them to Inginiyagala Hospital.

At the time of the accident, two Buddhist monks and two lay individuals were traveling in the car. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the two lay individuals were brothers from the same family. The elder brother, who serves with the Sri Lanka Army attached to the Trincomalee camp, was driving the car, and reports indicate that he lost control of the vehicle, leading to the accident.

The two individuals who tragically lost their lives in this unfortunate accident are Venerable Wawinna Sunanda Thero, who resided at the Wawinna Temple in Ampara, and Chandima Lakmal, the Army soldier who was driving the vehicle.  The elder brother died at the scene.
The surviving brother, who was also in the vehicle heading to Wawinna Temple at the time of the accident, was initially admitted to Inginiyagala Hospital and later transferred to Ampara General Hospital for further treatment.
Post-mortem examinations are scheduled to be conducted on the bodies of the deceased soldier and monk, and Inginiyagala Police have commenced further investigations into the incident.
