The Department of Irrigation has issued a red alert warning of a major flood situation in the low-lying areas of the Attanagalu Oya basin. This warning notice, numbered 04, was issued at 3:00 AM on November 28, 2025, and will be valid until 3:00 AM on November 30, 2025, according to the Hydrology and Disaster Management Division of the department.
Heavy rainfall is currently being experienced in many areas of the Attanagalu Oya basin, and an analysis of river water levels indicates a high probability of this flood situation developing within the next 48 hours.
Accordingly, this major flood risk will affect the low-lying areas of the Attanagalu Oya and Uruwal Oya basins, which fall under the Divisional Secretariat divisions of Divulapitiya, Mirigama, Attanagalla, Mahara, Gampaha, Minuwangoda, Ja-Ela, Katana, and Wattala.
Due to this emergency, there is a risk of roads passing through the affected low-lying areas being inundated. Therefore, the Department of Irrigation urges residents and drivers in these areas to exercise extreme caution. Furthermore, Engineer L.S. Sooriyabandara, Director of Irrigation (Hydrology and Disaster Management), stated in the issued notice that relevant disaster management units have been informed to take necessary steps to protect lives and property.
