According to a statement issued tonight (27) by the Hydrology and Disaster Management Division of the Department of Irrigation, a red alert has been issued regarding an extremely severe flood situation developing around several major rivers and streams across the island.
Due to continuous heavy rainfall in the relevant catchment areas, water levels in the gauges under the Department of Irrigation have risen significantly, and this warning is valid until 11:30 PM on November 29, 2025.This urgent flood risk will primarily affect low-lying areas around the river basins of the Mahaweli River, Deduru Oya, Maha Oya, Kala Oya, Menik Ganga, and Malwathu Oya. The Department of Irrigation indicates that these rivers have already overflowed, causing severe flooding in the affected areas, and there is a strong tendency for water levels to rise further in the coming period.
Considering this hazardous situation, Irrigation Director Engineer L.S. Sooriyabandara urges the public residing in and around the affected river basins and low-lying areas to remain highly vigilant, and for those living in low-lying areas along riverbanks to take immediate steps to evacuate to safe locations. Instructions have also been given to the relevant disaster management units to take urgent necessary measures to ensure public safety in the face of the current situation.
