A Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the Sri Lanka Air Force, engaged in disaster relief services, met with a sudden accident this afternoon (30). The aircraft encountered the accident while conducting disaster rescue operations in the area between Wennappuwa and Lunuwila.
According to reports, the helicopter lost control near the Lunuwila bridge and crashed into the Gin Oya. Air Force sources confirm that the aircraft was deployed to rescue and provide relief to people trapped by floods amidst the prevailing adverse weather conditions.
Immediately after the accident, local residents and security forces launched a swift operation to rescue those on board the aircraft. Air Force personnel traveling in the helicopter sustained injuries in the crash, and it is reported that two of them have been successfully rescued so far.
Several ambulances have arrived at the accident site to transport the injured to the hospital. Operations are still underway to rescue the remaining individuals from the aircraft, and security forces in the area are conducting further investigations.
