Amidst the Miss Universe organization facing numerous crises and controversial incidents this year, another victorious contestant has decided to relinquish her title. Olivia Yacé, who represented Ivory Coast and secured fourth place at the 2025 Miss Universe competition held in Bangkok on November 21st, and was crowned 'Miss Universe Africa and Oceania', has abruptly resigned from her position.
Olivia stated that while the competition revealed her potential for great achievements, her future path must honor the principles she values, such as respect, dignity, excellence, and equal opportunities. Issuing a statement via social media, she announced her decision to suspend all future relations with the Miss Universe committee. She further emphasized her aspiration to be a role model for young women, and that by stepping away from her current limited role, she would be able to fully dedicate herself to the values she cherishes.
Addressing the Black, African, and Caribbean communities, she urged them not to let anyone pull them down or limit them, but to bravely enter even places they might not deem suitable for themselves.
While grateful for these experiences, she declared that she would continue her journey in a different way, stating, "IT'S TIME FOR AFRICA."
Just days before Olivia's resignation, Brigitta Schaback, who represented Estonia, also stepped down from her position. Brigitta made this decision, citing that the moral values and working style of the Estonian national director were incompatible with her own. She emphasized her commitment to working independently for women's empowerment and equality.
This year's competition has been plagued by various obstacles and crises from its inception. One contestant fell off the stage and was injured, while some judges resigned due to alleged unfair practices within the competition. The most controversial incident involved Nawat Itsaragrisil, the President of the Asia and Oceania region, publicly insulting the Mexican contestant (the current Miss Universe) before the competition and calling security to remove her from an event. When other contestants attempted to withdraw in protest of this incident, he threatened to revoke their competition titles. Although it was later reported that he had been removed from his position, subsequent photos showed him appearing with the new Miss Universe.
