The Golden Gun

A gold-plated T56 assault rifle discovered inside the bag of a 68-year-old woman residing at the Havelock City apartment complex in Wellawatte has been linked to senior Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) politician Duminda Dissanayake, according to ongoing police investigations.

Investigations have revealed that the former minister allegedly sent the firearm to the woman’s residence via his personal bodyguard six months ago, instructing her to hide it. A special police team visited the Avissawella area on the 21st to arrest the former minister’s bodyguard

Further inquiries uncovered that the woman is a close friend of the ex-minister. It was found that she had unknowingly kept the bag, unaware it contained a T56 rifle. The bag remained in her home for six months until her son took it for a leisure trip recently. During this time, the woman placed the bag containing the rifle in the trunk of her car, unintentionally transporting the weapon.

This unexpected turn of events led to the exposure of the serious incident. Security personnel at the Havelock City complex noticed the firearm and immediately informed the Wellawatte Police. Upon inspection, the police confirmed that it was not a toy gun but a modern T56 assault rifle.

The T56 is a primary firearm used by the Sri Lankan armed forces. Its possession by a civilian is considered a serious national security breach. The former minister is also expected to be taken into custody in connection with this incident.
