Helicopter Crash in Maduru Oya Claims Six Lives

 

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter, operated by the No. 7 Squadron, crashed into the Maduru Oya Reservoir during a demonstration flight this morning. The event was part of a passing-out ceremony at the Special Forces Training School in Maduru Oya.

Personnel Onboard

According to initial reports, 12 individuals were aboard the helicopter, including:

2 Air Force pilots

Members of the Sri Lanka Air Force

Army Special Forces personnel

Rescue & Casualties

All 12 personnel were rescued and rushed to hospital. Sadly, six of them were pronounced dead after being admitted to Polonnaruwa Hospital.

Identities of the Deceased

The fatalities include:

2 Air Force gunners

4 Army Special Forces members

Official Investigation Launched

The Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force has appointed a 9-member inquiry committee to investigate the incident and determine its cause.
