Clash Between Police and Military Prevented

A potential clash between police and military personnel was swiftly averted during the ongoing exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, following a viral incident that caught national attention.

The situation unfolded when a video began circulating on social media, showing a police officer scolding a soldier near a public queue at the revered religious event. The footage, which quickly gained traction online, raised concerns about the conduct of security forces in a highly sensitive and crowded setting.

Upon being alerted to the incident, the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) wasted no time. He immediately ordered an investigation into the matter and instructed the Superintendent of Police in charge of Kandy District 1 to conduct a thorough probe. Recognizing the seriousness of maintaining harmony between the two key forces — the police and the military — the Acting IGP also directed that strict disciplinary action be taken against the policeman involved, pending the outcome of the investigation.

By acting decisively and transparently, police authorities managed to de-escalate tensions before they could flare into a more serious confrontation. Disciplinary steps and public acknowledgment of the investigation reassured the military and the general public, preserving the solemnity of the religious occasion and reinforcing trust in institutional accountability.
