Air Quality Drops -Masks Recommended

The Environmental Studies & Services Division of the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued a warning that air quality indicators may rise to slightly unhealthy or unhealthy levels across the country in the coming days. Currently, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Sri Lanka ranges from moderate to significantly unhealthy levels.

The forecast suggests that the AQI will fall between 68 and 140 throughout the day, which indicates slightly unhealthy air quality in most cities. However, cities such as Jaffna, Kurunegala, Vavuniya, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, Mullaitivu, Batticaloa, and Kalutara are expected to experience moderate levels of air quality.

The cause of the unhealthy air quality is attributed to the polluted winds blowing from the northern region, carrying transboundary pollutants from neighbouring areas. These winds are carrying dust, smoke, and other harmful particles, which are exacerbating the air quality across Sri Lanka. This phenomenon is often caused by a combination of seasonal weather patterns and industrial emissions in nearby regions.

As a precaution, the public has been advised to wear face masks whenever possible to minimize exposure to harmful air particles. People, especially those who are sensitive, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions, are urged to seek immediate medical attention if they experience any difficulty breathing or other health issues related to the air quality.
