Student membership of 30 students who removed CCTV at Kelaniya ... cancelled for two years -- Vice chancellor

Vice chancellor, Professor D. Semasingha yesterday (26) said that thirty students responsible for the act of removing all CCTV cameras installed at Kelaniya university have been identified. The vice chancellor says that these students who are identified would be subjected to a punishment of suspension of their studentship for a period of two years in the least. It was possible to identify the students according to eye-witness evidence and CCTV recordings. The management is preparing to take steps to hold a formal disciplinary inquiry
regarding those students.

Academic activities of new students were scheduled to begin on March 9th. Information has already been received that plans have been launched to sabotage such arrangements and to cause displeasure to the vice chancellor which is at the back of this earlier incident. The management further suspect that some persons engaged in a big struggle to grab the position of vice chancellor would have motivated the students concerned.

It was last 24th evening that these CCTV equipment was removed. It was after the Easter attack that administration authorities took steps to install this camera equipment. The main student society requested management sections that these cameras be removed; but the administration rejected the request these cameras as they were necessary for protection of the university.
