Story told by family members of father of one child subjected to road accident by actor Kavinga Perera

"Malli was someone who fought to live. He did his job irrespective of whether day or night because he had no proper mode of earning to keep home fires burning to look after the family. Because of this tragic accident his two-month old daughter and malli's wife fell into a terrible helpless state". That is what Mrs. Gammana Liyanage Chandralatha, sister of Gammana Liyanage Wasantha Udaya Kumara the forty two year old father of one child said.
He was living in Mawathawaththa, Welapahala, Meegahathenna and was a maintenance worker of road development authority when he was struck by the vehicle of actor Kavinga Perera last 18th at Thalawathugoda, Athurugiriya. 

That day he was engaged in attending to maintenance duties at about 12.40 in the night on the crossing opposite Thalawathugoda filling station when the said accident happened. Though he was admitted to hospital with serious injuries, he was already dead, hospital sources said. 

Mrs. Chandralatha also said, "Aney .. everybody in the village know that my malli was a very innocent person. Our family cannot bear up this sorrow. How many families are left destitute in this country because of accidents caused by drunkenness! Now we have lost our malli. But we plead that the law should be implemnted at its maximum for a thing like this not to happen to another". 

Mr. Gammana Liyanage Nilantha, elder brother of the deceased who was at the place where the accident took place had this to say. My malli who is dead and I worked at at a private firm affiliated to road development. At that time we were engaged in painting the crossing in front of the shed. About seven of us were attending to maintenance matters at that place. I was marking the crossing and went forward a little and looked into other work when I suddenly heard malli being struck by the vehicle. Immediately I ran towards malli. Just then the vehicle sped. A crowd who was there ran behind the vehicle and managed to get at the vehicle. In the accident some problem has happened in the vehicle and as a result the vehicle was not able to proceed at a speed and if not the vehicle would have made its escape, it came to be known. 

It was later known that the person responsible for the accident was an actor. It also came to be known and confirmed from medical tests that he was in an intoxicated state. Malli is a very innocent character. His daughter is just two months old. It indeed is a big tragedy that has occured. Everyone responsible for accidents like this should be punished irrespective of his status". Wife of the deceased was not in a position to say anything because of the shock. The deceased from the accident was someone who moved about frequently with neighbours and villagers most cordially and someone who did no harm to another, many people in the area said.
