The kidnapping scene of police constable Jayantha Rajapaksa who served as a driver affiliated to police was a pathetic piece of news which people came to hear of last week.

37 year old constable Rajapaksa who lived in Kuda Bibula, Weeraketiya was the third in a family of four. Rajapaksa joined the police force in the year 2013 by taking the opportunity of joining as a
police driver as for married persons and those engaged in other professions.

Constable Rajapaksa who was the father of two sons aged eight years and three years was abducted at about 1.20 in the night of last 17th and that was when he came to the road afer being in the company of a woman in a hotel down Hunupitiya Road, Kiribathgoda.

The moment the constable's kidnapping took place, investigation activities in that connection were handed over to the crime investigation unit of Peliyagoda division under directions of Mr. Varuna Jayasundera, deputy inspector general of police of north-west. Under instructions of Mr. Roshan Dias, superintendent of police in charge of Peliyagoda division, a police team headed by officer in charge, inspector of police Mr. Linton Silva commenced sharp operations in search of missing constable Rajapaksa.

As such, investigating officers were able to find the body of Rajapaksa who was cut and chopped on last 21st morning was found in a shrubbery forest in Bulugoda area in Pannala. It was possible to unravel the story of Rajapaksa's kidnapping together with the woman Padmini who was taken into custody by Peliyagoda crime unit who incidentally had been in the company of Rajapaksaand also Kokila, a relative daughter of Padmini who brought meals for them from their confession. Below is how that story unfolds.

Padmini is a 47 year old woman. She lives in Wattala and is someone who is somewhat established. She even owns a luxury vehicle and her husband Nilantha is behind bars; and that is for dealing in narcotics. It is revealed that Padmini has made all her earnings from narcotics trade, so to say. She has two children. The elder son who is 20 years old is known as Bunty. Padmini's younger sister's son who lives in her house is Sudda. He is aged 23 years. Both Sudda and Bunty are seriously addicted to the narcotics called 'ice'.

About three years back Sudda was apprehended by police for a traffic offence. That day a relationship developed between Sudda and constable Rajapaksa. It is learned that because of that friendship Sudda had been able to settle the issue without legal entanglements. Subsequently, it is understood that police constable had begun to make visits to Sudda's house in Wattala. Though Sudda was a resident of Pannala, at that time he was living at his elder aunt Padmini's house in Wattala.

Sudda's elder sister is a woman craving 'fun' and greedy for liquor. One day when a police officer had called over at the house, Sudda on addressing him and said, "Our Loku amma desires fun ... shall we get set one day?" As such, Sudda, Rajapaksa, Padmini, Bunty ad the crowd had engaged in a liquor party. After the party some fom of physical affinity developed between Rajapaksa and Padmini. On that alliance developed between the two, she has secured co-operation of constable Rajapaksa. In that context Rajapaksa has put his hands into financial administration activities of Padmini as a member of the same family.

Even by that time Padmini's husband was in jail .. convicted of dealing in narcotics. When time passed by like this, one day Bunty and Sudda asked some money to enjoy narcotics and that money was given on the knowledge of Rajapaksa. Due to this reason Sudda and Bunty were faced with
a financial problem. The motor vehicle in the house was used by Bunty till that time. But later the vehicle came into the custody of constable Rajapaksa. In the meantime Padmini bought an expensive motor bicycle for Rajapaksa. Thus while the constable was enjoying much luxury, Bunty faced a big problem with arrears piling up for not having paid up leasing premiums for the three-wheeler he was in possession of. With such incidents, both Sudda and Bunty began to develop some misunderstanding with constable Rajapaksa.

Bunty used to inform about everything of what is happening at home to his father who was in prison  to which the father has said, "Yakko .. are you'll men? Why are you taking that fellow into the house? Chase him away! Under these circumstances Bunty and Sudda began to stand against the police officer. When time passed by amidst such turbulence, a clash flared up between Bunty and his mother and that was when Bunty tried to assault Padmini. Padmini in turn notified about this to constable Rajapaksa by phoning him on 16th night. In that instance, Rajapaksa who was relaxing at police quarters hastened to the Wattala house where Padmini was living. That house incidentally was the house of D. Manju .. a notorious and powerful underworld criminal in Wattala area.

Manju died on February 23rd, 2018 from an attack launched against him by police special task force and it is his wife Kokila who lives in that house. Padmini is an aunt to her by relationship. At the time the police officer was at in that house in the company of Padmini, Bunty and Sudda put in their heads there. When he police officer and Padmini were hiding inside the house, the two sons went out from the house in a short while after making a big shout. Just then what Kokila had told her aunt was, "Nenda .. now go away from here .. otherwise those fellows will come again and then there would be a big problem!" Soon after Kokila said that, Padmini has left with Rajapaksa at about one that night and stayed at a hotel down Hunupitiya Road in Kiribathgoda.

A  short while after reaching the said hotel, Padmini had given a call to Kokila and said, "Duwe .. I am so hungry .. there's nothing here to buy as food .. can you bring something and give?" In response to her request Kokila has got something like rotti and having got on to a scooty with her younger brother .. both of them were on their way to the hotel where the couple was.

In the process, Padmini has told the constable, "Now duwa is bringing some food. If you fetch the parcel from anywhere close to the hotel ... puthala will come to know where we are. So go a little forward and take the parcel". Likewise, when he was walking about hundred metres from the hotel they were ... he met Kokila and when Rajapaksa was just about to return to the hotel. A three-wheeler abruptly came there. Rajapaksa who was walking was forcibly pushed into the three-wheeler all of which were recorded on a nearby CCTV camera, it was revealed at police investigations.

Padmini made a revelation to police officers who were engaged in investigations regarding a group of about five individuals who kidnapped Rajapaksa around 1.20 at dawn on 17th. One day Sudda had told, "Loku amme ... if that ralahamy puts a part to me ... you know my nature, don't you? What I would do is I'll take the fellow to Pannala area and throw him into a forest .. so that he won't be able to return anymore!"

Padmini in police custody saying such a thing police suspicions were aroused that Rajapaksa had been kidnapped and taken to Pannala area. They then proceeded to Sudda's house in Pannala. Thus it was in that manner that crime investigation officers of Peliyagoda division and Kuliyapitiya police officers strived day and night to find a clue about Rajapaksa and that was by covering both Pannala Kankaniyamulla reserve and coconut plantations around that area. But what they were able to find was a pair of footwear which could be suspected as having been worn by Rajapaksa and some blood stains. Though Kuliyapitiya police dogs Wicky and Lac were employed .. there was no further clue as such.

In the meantime, on the night of the day Rajapaksa was abducted, police officers who engaged in a telephone dialogue with Sudda, Sudda's father's elder brother's son living in Nagoda, Kandana was arrested. What officers told him was to get a call to Sudda. As such, Sudda responded saying, "I have no money in my hand men. Put ten or fifteen. I'll send an account number". From that account number police were able to locate his address. It was a house in Bulugoda area in Pannala. That was the house of Sanju ... a friend of Sudda. Sanju too is a criminal who was involved in narcotics dealings. The house which was identified on 20th ... police raided on 21st morning and on that occasion Sudda and Sanju were in the house.

On interrogation carried out on both of them, it was possible to find the body of murdered Rajapaksa ... cut and chopped inside a shrubbery forest about 750 metres away from Sanju's house. A police officer engaged in investigations said that it is suspected as to whether this murder was done with the knowledge of Padmini herself and that it would be possible to found out everything from future investigations.
