Priyashanthi de Soysa mentioned this addressing a media briefing held yesterday (31) at Godakawela, Ratnapura.
"I had no hope of stepping into politics. My beloved husband had not said that I or my son should step into politics. But as I can't ignore the strong request by the public ... I arrived at this decision. The request made by thousands of people who attended final rites of Mr. Ranjith de Soysa recently was that.
Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa invited me to come over for a discussion regarding this. So I attended it in the company of my son. On that occasion what the prime minister told me was to start future political activities in Rakwana seat from where Ranjith stopped. That request was a great strength as well as a big blessing. Even MPs and ministers in parliament asked me to join in active politics. They promised to give me maximum support. It was because of the blessing I received in that manner that I took this decision.
Though I cannot move at the same speed as Ranjith de Soysa, the skillful politician, I just can't isolate supporters who were by his side. But I have the belief that I possess capabilities in carrying out the maximum through politics. I am ready to have discussions in future with provincial and local government leaders of Ratnapura district who stayed in politics with Mr. Ranjith de Soysa. I have a great belief that they would offer their support. Equally so, even by now a large crowd have come forward to give their support. Late Mr. Ranjith de Soysa's son, Mr. T. Lakith Pankaja de Soysa has attended this media briefing.
