Ranil declines contesting for general election
Political news sources have reported that UNP leader Ranil Wickremasingha would not be contesting for a membership in parliament. This information was revealed from a statement made by MP and field marshal Mr. Sarath Fonseka. He has mentioned this saying that Mr. Ranil Wickremasingha has told him that former prime minister would not be coming forward again for an election. He mentioned this on the occasion when he visited Welikada prison to see former minister, Mr. Patali Champika Ranawaka.
"We did one election ... keeping Mr. Sajith Premadasa in the forefront as leader. We cannot go on various paths from election to election. We reached one decision and worked. We should go ahead by taking that decision. I spoke to Mr. Ranil Wickremasingha also. Met him two days. On both those occasions what he said was that he would not be contesting again. If his mentality is so ... I believe that he should hand over leadership to Mr. Sajith Premadasa. What I think is that it is propitious".
