Operations at Polonnaruwa to rescue bus with 54 passengers swept away by flood waters
Polonnaruwa police said that 54 passengers inclusive of small children, pregnant mothers and several women swept away early this morning (21) at Gallella, Polonnaruwa swept away were rescued at Gallella area in Polonnaruwa.
This bus with passengers had been travelling from Maduru Oya to Colombo and was caught in the
floods between Gallella and Manampitiya along Polonnaruwa - Batticaloa main road and had been swept away. Water level of Gallella area in Polonnaruwa - Batticaloa main road has by now reached about 6 feet, police said. Police, the army, civil defence forces and other rescue teams have taken prominence in rescuing the passengers cornered inside the bus as a result of flood waters. In the process irrigation officers said that 8 out of 10 spill gates of Polonnaruwa Parakrama Samudraya have been opened today (21).
