" ... Thought that we would secure more votes than this" -- Anura Kumara
National People's Power headed by Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna released a press communique stating that though they failed to achieve victory in presidential election, their responsibilities and duties would be carried nonetheless. This announcement released yesterday (17) says as follows:
"The 2019 presidential election is over and its result has been released. Accordingly Mr. Gotabhaya
Rajapaksa has clinched victory at presidential election this time. As the National People's Power we cannot be satisfied with the number votes received in this presidential election as such. Though we anticipated more votes than this, we should admit that we could not achieve it.
Rajapaksa has clinched victory at presidential election this time. As the National People's Power we cannot be satisfied with the number votes received in this presidential election as such. Though we anticipated more votes than this, we should admit that we could not achieve it.
Anyhow, the National People's Power; the extended democratic progressive, leftist and genuine patriotic camp has marked the beginnings of an extended public campaign which we have been successful in. In the same manner, we managed to create a deep principled dialogue within the country instead of the mud-slinging carried out on political stages in Sri Lanka, resorting to indecent language and giving stocks of 'sillara' promises.
On the other hand, when some parties have tried to secure votes by igniting nationalism on presidential election stages thus scaring various nationalities, it was possible for us to build up an election stage sans nationalism but equipped with national unity. We see it as a beneficial factor for the future. It is quite clear that both main political parties when looking at the presidential campaign, have tried to secure the votes to them by misleading minds of the public by creating and instilling fear in the masses in the North as well as in the South. It is clear that doors of such an opportunity was however was shut on the effort made by us to make people aware through a principled dialogue.
Whatever it is, though those who clinched victory from results of this presidential election happen to enjoy themselves jubilantly, it however is explicit that when considering from the viewpoint of the public; the masses have actually not trounced. Those who came into power do not have a solution to the socio - economic, political and cultural crisis which exists within the country. Therefore, what the masses are heir to is is nothing but the polluted and pressurised social life that they had tasted for 71 years.
