"A new government could be made with the new mandate" -- former chief justice Sarath N. Silva
Since the only person in a democratic manner representing an entire nation is the president, what Mr. Sarath N. Silva said was that he would be bestowed with complete executive powers, a new government could be formed by Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa who has received the mandate. Joining in with a special discussion with Lanka Lead news website yesterday (17) he emphasised this matter.
What he further said was that not putting into force the full powers assigned to the president available
to him by the constitution would mean that administration of the country and that position itself is demeaned to some extent.
to him by the constitution would mean that administration of the country and that position itself is demeaned to some extent.
Quoting the tenure of Mr. Maithripala Sirisena as an example, Mr. Sarath N. Silva pointed out that when initiating a new government, mistakes committed should be rectified and that powers allotted to the new president by the constitution should be imparted to him to be properly carried out without influence from others.
