Galthenne devagethi kapu mahatha who became a sensational character in mass media and ironically the kovil was robbed early last morning and what is reported by now is that they have been taken into custody and robbed items.

A group of robbers who gained entry to Sri Badrakali devala in Galthenna, Thalathu oya has tied up Galthenna  kapu mahatha and has fled after pinching about 12 kilos of gold and 20 lakhs in cash. Police say that the value of the gold so robbed amounts to over 8 crores. Apart from this, some small
gems there also had been robbed in the process.

A group of about seven persons have entered the devala and had got hold of the kapu mahaththaya at the moment when he was getting ready for the pooja and was tied up and put him inside a room after which this robbery was carried out. The woman attending to cooking procedures and workers too locked up inside a room. After he was tied up the gold items and cash were pinched after getting the key from him. Police say that these suspects have entered the devala with the aid of a rope used to climb the huge wall around the devala. Police further say that a group of individuals who had been eyeing kapu mahaththaya going here and there dressed up in gold necklaces and bangles may have carried out this robbery. It was revealed by police investigations that he has had a large amount of gold kilos in his possession. As a large number of people visit this devala daily and would donate gold and money; the place was given police protection too.

With the direction of officer in charge of Thalathu oya police, police inspector, Mr. Aruna Krishantha further investigations were carried out by officer in charge of crime division, sub inspector, Wijeykoon with a posse of policemen had launched further inquiries by using police dogs and CCTV cameras. By subjecting CCTV data to inspection and on information secured, police were able to find the three-wheeler in which the suspects have come.

After investigations conducted across the three-wheeler police were successful in arresting four suspects who were involved in the crime by dawn today (26). Also, police were successful in finding the said 10 kilos of gold items worth Rs. 500 lakhs. On that occasion it was reported that 6 suspects had come for the robbery while investigations are underway to track other suspects and other robbed items.
