Accident of two ladies embracing death on highway because mother asked driver-son to play a song
A fatal accident occured close to Dodangoda area along southern expressway last week. This accident has occured when a luxury jeep which was speeding had crashed into a truck parked by the side on the road. This accident which occured at kilometre thirty one point seven resulted in injuring a businessman who was driving the vehicle and three females who were inside. Later two of
the females passed away. The deceased were Sunethra Jayanthi Cooray from Siddhamulla and Rupawathi Atthanayaka from Piliyandala. It was deceased Sunethra's son, a businessman who was at the steering-wheel at the moment of the tragedy and the accident in fact took place when she and three of her friends were on their way back home with her son after attending a funeral in Karandeniya area.
When this luxury jeep had passed Dodangoda expressway access and was travelling a short distance, the deceased mother had told her son who was driving to activate the cassette-recorder, it was revealed by a statement given to police. On that occasion his attention was broken for a moment and instantly the vehicle which was speeding had struck the truck parked and he was not in a position to avoid the accident with time enough to control his vehicle.
After colliding with the truck, it had actually got stuck in the rear part of that vehicle and almost an hour had passed to extricate with utmost difficulty the injured victims from inside the vehicle. A police officer said that the front part of the jeep had to be cut off in the process.
Police say that of the five who suffered serious injuries, the driver and the females were admitted to Nagoda hospital while the other three females were admitted to Bandaragama, Panadura and Horana hospitals. Police further mentions that of the two patients who died were the females who were hospitalised at Nagoda hospital and the other female who was admitted to Bandaragama district hospital.
