Mahindra car assembly plant ... opens in Welipenna
A factory which assembles and produces local motor vehicles was opened in Kalutara, Welipenna last Saturday. It is a massive investment which runs into Rs. 3 billion and is called Mahindra Ideal Lanka. Mini SUS type KUV100 vehicle was launched as their first vehicle on that day. Upto now assembling activities were done in Sri Lanka and it was spare parts of vehicles brought down entirely from foreign countries after completion there. But the speciality in this factory is that parts produced in Sri Lanka too are mixed with parts produced abroad. As reported, tyres, batteries, sheets and exhaust systems too would be produced in Sri Lanka.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasingha, India's high commissioner Tharanjith Singh Sindu and distinguished guests were present at the official opening of Mahindra Ideal latest factory. Chairman of Ideal Business Holdings would be Mr. Nalin Welgama while deputy chairman would be former topnotch player Aravinda de Silva.
It was mentioned that in this regard apart from generation of employment 35% of local value would be added and that within the scope of the motor industry local entrepreneurs would get an opportunity to boost their business. Mahindra Ideal Lanka factory is equipped with latest technology and hopes to assemble 5,000 Mahindra KUV100 vehicles for an year. It is believed that within the next two years there is a possibility of generating a bulk of employment opportunities either directly or indirectly.
