As a solution for the traffic congestion in the city of Colombo, steps were taken to operate a ferry service recently, commencing from Union Place (Ibbanwala junction) to Colombo Fort. When travelling by bus the time expended is about 30 minutes while by using this ferry service it takes 9 - 10 minutes, it was informed. Passengers are provided free service for the first month of operation and
later, fees would be introduced. This service which has been launched in combination by the Sri Lanka Navy and Corporation of Sri Lanka Land Development boasts of 3 ferries to their credit. One of those is one with air-conditioned facility with 5o seating capacity while the other two have a capacity of 14 seats while the vessel is not air-conditioned. 78 passengers are provided travelling facilities from these three ferries and more ferries are expected to be provided in the future.

The said ferries would be in operation on a daily basis in the morning from 7.30 and 9 while the ferries would be in operation from 3.30 to 5.30 in the afternoon. During the course of travel, a new journey will start once every 20 minutes. In the 6 months ahead it is expected to extend the route towards Wellawatta and towards Battaramulla. There is yet another plan to initiate a similar service between Mattakkuliya and Hanwella across Kelani ganga. These activities will be developed in future with a passenger service operating from Colombo uptu Negombo in future. Authorities inform that after success is achieved in passenger-transport activities, the service will be widened to transport goods too across the waters.
