Ajantha Mendis bids farewell ... without a noise

Ajantha Mendis, a wonderful spin bowler born to Sri Lanka announced his departure from the game yesterday (28). The International Cricket Council has confirmed it across its website.

Having displayed his skills at Army Sports club, he received his Test cap in the year 2008 and has thereon participated in 19 Test matches, 87 international one-day matches, 39 international Twenty-
20 international cricket matches representing Sri Lanka. He has showed his prowess by claiming 70 Test wickets, 152 one-day wickets and 66 wickets in Twenty-20 matches. He further played a big role in pushing Sri Lanka team to the finals in the 2011 World Cup cricket tournament. Mendis thus happens to be a member of he team which claimed the 2012 Twenty-20 World Cup.

After the year 2015 Mendis has not participated in any international match as such. He in fact somewhat kept away from cricket because of a leg injury and though he convalesced, authorities took no interest in his selection. Ajantha Mendis is presently passing through his 34th year and his age to play further has posed a question. In any case as cricket administrators took no effort to test his skills in the past, he had to bid farewell like a flower which untimely withered away. While his departure takes place silently in this manner, there is no commemoration organised for his farewell. Fast bowler Chaminda Vaas too left the cricketing field without any celebration.
