ocean current while on a trip to Yala. As Mrs. Hasini was in a critical condition, she was transferred from Tissamaharama hospital to Amparai basic hospital and was being treated at the intensive care unit at the hospital when she was brought to a private hospital in Colombo and she passed away yesterday 29th while being treated at the intensive care unit there.
The final rights of her husband and two daughters were conducted last 25th at Hatton, Kudagama general cemetery and the seventh day almsgiving was held yesterday (29) at their home in Hatton by relatives of the family and wellwishers . Bank employee Hashini had got married to businessman Indika 8 years before this. The elder daughter, Nesathma Sahanli (6) had received her education in school while younger daughter, Nadeesha Inomi (4) was following pre-school education.
Employees of the private bank where Hasini was serving had made it a custom to enjoy an annual trip. Members of the family too could join on that trip. So this year too they made this trip as usual and that was last 21st, 22nd and 23rd. They had found lodging at a hotel in Yala and Indika, Hasin and the two children saying that they wanted to go to the beach in order to trod on the waters had left the hotel premises at 6 in the morning the last day and had gone to the Kirinda sea coast in Tissamaharama, close to their hotel. Even by then some of those in their clique had come near the sea and it was noticed that the sea had turned rough. Indika had been trampling waves on the beach by then with the younger daughter. Hasini in the meantime had been engaged in picking up sea shells in the company of the elder daughter, while another crowd close by was enjoying the beauty of the ocean.
Hasini then had walked a short distance away from the sea coast area and has given a call to a bank comrade, Thilini who joined them on this trip. "Why nangi are you sticking to your room; come to the beach ... have some fun. So on Hasini's invitation she had come there. Indika who saw her, spoke to Thilini and said, "Nangi, come here and trample the waters here". "
Aney ayye, I am of course afraid!"
"What to get afraid of ... the daughters also are here, no".
So according to Indika's invitation, Thilini too went ahead. While Hasini was trodding the waters with the elder daughter, Indika was trodding waters with younger daughter and Thilini too joined them. Everybody was thus engaged in this activity and enjoying themselves with water splashing on their bodies and Indika proceeded to capture some shots in his camera and even videoed ... particularly the two children. In the process he even said, "Only these will be left as memories!"
Indika who held the hand of younger daughter went further towards the sea. Just then Hasini shouted saying that the sea is rough and not to go much towards the sea. "Okay okay we are not too much far". Only a few moments passed after his remark; some big waves kept gushing in. Only a split second passed; a large wave cascaded towards the shore. Indika, Thilini and younger daughter who were towards the sea a little distance away from the shore got trapped in that wave. Indika could do nothing with that terrific gush of water. He lost grip with the hand of his daughter whom he loved more than his life.
Hasini was able to see in the twinkling oh her eye as to what happened. For a moment she forgot the elder daughter who was in her company. She spontaneously made a valiant bid to save the daughter which she loved like her own life with utmost emotion, shouting all the while. But it was to no avail. Even by that time the elder daughter had been washed away by the waters.
With the onset of the second tidal wave, Thilini and Hasini had the fortune to stay alive and that was because they were drifted towards land. However she was in an unconscious state due to sea water reaching her lungs. The rest of the group who were witnesses to this unfortunate incident tried to search for Indika and the two children; but it turned out to be unsuccessful. They had already passed away by that time. Thilini's life of course was saved. Hasini breathed her last a week later. Mrs. Hasini Wijeysuriya's body lies at the residence down 'Saaththu Nivasa' Road and her final rights are to be notified later, kith and kin of the family said.
