England ready to accept again the stock of waste material
Central environment authority has informed that the stock of hazardous waste sent to this country by England causing an uproar sometime back is to be accepted back once again thus resulting in a positive response.
Director Mr. Ajith Weerasundera of hazardous waste and chemicals unit management informs that
discussions have been held with relevant institutions in handing over this stock of garbage. At present a part of the garbage remains at Katunayaka Free Trade Zone while garbage contained in 111 containers are at Colombo port international container terminal. Attorney General's Department has directed a notification to appeal court prohibiting this waste material to be used contrary to the law of waste management or as detrimental to the environment.

It was reported that human remains and chemical waste were found in these containers and the government analyst's observation report has still not been received in this connection. A similar incident as in Sri Lanka took place in Malaysia recently and on that occasion the stock of garbage was once more returned to England.
