Commotion in Pasyala because of Buddha statues being destroyed
It is a sad state of affairs with ethnic issues cropping up incessantly during the past and it has raised its head once again. This time an incident where the head part of two Buddha statues in a Buddha edifice in Pasyala town along Colombo - Kandy Road has been chopped apart was reported yesterday (5)after which a tensed situation has arisen in Pasyala.
In this instance damage was done to the top part (head) and right hand of a large Buddha statue which
stands at the Buddha edifice there. Though CCTV cameras have been installed at that place, they had not been functioning, it is understood. After a complaint made, on police investigations carried out found a slipper of some person. After the said incident was reported, the maha sangha and public in the area have gathered in large numbers and staged a protest saying that the police are slow to respond. It was reported that the police dog Olie was brought to the scene of the incident while a fingerprint examination too has been conducted. Police and 2 army captains have been provided for protection of the city for suspicion that an unnecessary commotion that could result in this connection. Police inquiries are underway in this regard.
