Truth and falsity regarding Doctor Shafi
Gynaecologist and obstetrician Dr. Mohammed Shafi of Kurunegala hospital was taken into custody on the understanding that earning large number of assets which was considered unusual and it has now been found that ideas expressed over the media by now are both the truth and false. These suspicions have occured from clues received a political hand is in operation behind this story.
The first suspicion dawned with the revelation that the said doctor was someone who was involved in
operations for sterility while conducting Caesarian operations at the same time as was revealed by 'Island' newspaper ... even before police came to know about something like that. At the time such news was published, there were no complaints from patients and what was mentioned from that particular report was that the doctor had only made confidants know about those sterile operations.

At the time such news was published, there were no complaints from patients and what was mentioned from that particular report was that the doctor had only made confidants know about those sterile operations.
Even before two days elapsed after the 'Divaina' news item was published, Dr. Shafi was taken into custody from Kurunegala hospital with the understanding about earning assets in a rather unusual manner when there are hundreds and thousands who have earned assets in an unusual manner in recent times in Sri Lanka in this context. Which is, whether police have concealed the point that the doctor was arrested for the reason of sterility operations. Police may have brought forward such reasons with the objective of preventing unnecessary commotion or disturbance of tranquility taking place.
Whatever it is, the fire about the doctor goes up when principals of Kurunegala hospital provided information about it to the media with great interest. What those authorities have provided information certifying to the media that Dr. Shafi could be made the indiscriminated party if Dr. Shafi has indeed conducted sterile operations in the process of engaging in Caesarian operations and certified to the media relating such matters to them which in turn turned this issue to a more complex situation. In any case, an allegation was aimed that these principals for becoming active for some political motive. There are accusations that they are trying to throw hay on the burning fire on MP Mr. Wimal's rapport. There had been a political mess up because he has lost a position as an MP for the UNP. It was reported that in the meantime hospital authorities do not possess the privilege of holding a media briefing and that a separate inquiry is to be launched in that connection by the secretary of health. In the meantime it was reported that the hospital authorities had no powers to conduct a separate inquiry by secretary of the health ministry.
It was after that the suspicious issue springs up in this story. There were over 51 complaints received by Kurunegala hospital by yesterday against Dr.Seigu Sihabdeen Mohammed Safi of Kurunegala hospital who has been taken into custody. What Mr. Sarath Weera Bandara, hospital director said was that of those complaints 46 itself was received yesterday alone. Deputy directors, administrative officers and others were affiliated to record the petitioners.
What one mother informed was that she had noted this doctor removing the Fallopian tube while another lady mentioned that after the doctor gave her a 'welcome' drink, she had gone blind. If this is a furore built up for political reasons, a person who pursues the middle path has every opportunity to bring forward these allegations in a false manner. Whatever it is, everything must be proved scientifically. In such cases a 'dye-test' examination has to be conducted in such instances and other doctors and nurses present at the moment of the Caesarian operation should provide evidence.
In any case it is reported that 4 of the petitions have been filed by doctors who were serving with him. If at all according to what they say a patient lady was forcibly subjected to a sterile operation ... those factors will be confirmed. As such, a team of the health ministry is expected to be present at Kurunegala hospital in order to conduct a special inquiry in this connection. Whatever it is, they say that even till last afternoon (27) no complaint was received in connection with Dr. Mohammed Shafi, gynaecologist and obstetrician of Kurunegala basic hospital.
Though patients are allowed to complain in writing to Sri Lanka Medical Council at any time about blunders or unjust action committed by a doctor during the process of his or her professional activities, it was informed that such an action has not occured before or after the mayhem. One may argue that patients were unaware about that institution. However, a patient had the option of making a complaint at least to a superintendent or director of a hospital. But when 4000 or 8000 operations were taking place, such an action not being taken arouses suspicion. The number of complaints received by police by now amounts to 15. Police sources say that those incidentally are not all related to operations as such. Though there are plenty of opportunities available for patients to complain in writing in a false manner if this is an uproar launched for some political motive in mind ... any person contemplating the middle path would easily realise.
On the other hand, there are 17 land deeds in the name of this doctor and those lands are around Kurunegala area. Police have received information that he has assets to the value of over 40 million and police further say that he has been arrested to question him whether such funds have been acquired by some extremist or terrorist group.
