First wife of Makandure Madush, Gayani Muthumali gives explanation about husband

A police operation has been launched searching for connections with relatives and associates of Makandure Madush who was taken into custody in Dubai.

A special female was summoned to the office of Senior Deputy General of Police in charge of South and Sabaragamuwa region, Ravi Wijeygunawardena last eleventh. It is Madush's legal wife, Gayani Muthumali. She was living in Mahagederawaththa, Watewela Makandura in the police division of
Kamburupitiya, Mawarala. Gayani Muthumali exposed her life story in brief to the senior deputy general of police. Following is her story:

"Both of us went to the same school. Both were in the same class. We went to Narandeniya Madhya Maha Vidyalaya. I am from Watewela in Makandura. Madush was from Gathare, Kamburupitiya. We had a romance during schooldays. Even at that time Madush was a handsome young man. He had a special attraction from female folk. From the beginning period Madush's family had great problems. From 1988 - 89 period the South was gripped with a terrible time of terror. Madush's mother is  killed in 1989. With that incident, the younger brother's dead body too was found murdered somewhere close to Matara Vella. Both these killings had an impact on the life of Madush. He was terribly depressed by those incidents. He lived with a vengeance in his heart with the public.

In the meantime his father had abandoned them and got himself involved with another marriage. Madush can study well. He even got through the GCE ordinary level. But because of these problems he could not continue with his studies. Our connection existed even after leaving school. But my father and mother never liked our affair. The reason is that with that prevailing situation, Madush had tended towards becoming a ruffian. Madush who left school after hos O/Levels, he began engaging in minor jobs. He went to Amparai in search of jobs. He then worked in a garage in Amparai. In the meantime some politicians made us of him for villainous activities".

Gayani's parents were those who had something to boast about their prestige with a respectable background. However, above everything their love was staunch. The two of them then got married on the sly against protest of Gayani's parents. It was in the year 1999 that their marriage took place. Even by that time Madush had acquired a name in the area for unacceptable acts.

It was in the very year of their marriage that Madush's name first of all was etched in the book for criminals and hat was on October 28th in 1999. His name went on record in Mawarala Police for having kept a gun in his possession. "After marriage we initially went into occupation in the village of Makandura, Gathare in Kamburupitiya. Later on opposition of parents faded away. We then lived in our hometown Makandura, Watewela, Mahagederawaththa. During that era our lives were spent in great peace, happiness. Subsequently Madush began hires in a three-wheeler. But he was not satisfied with that job. Then after that he began to engage in a job by using a hand-tractor", Gayani said.

It was during that period of time that Madush became acquainted with his disgusting life. In the process Madush and his wife Gayani get jobs in Matara Hospital as minor employees. Those openings were provided by a powerful politician. "Madush got the job as an attendant. I accepted the job of a senior worker. For a short period we stuck to that job".

All of a sudden Madush quit his job and later after using strong influence he removed his wife Gayani too from her job. Gayani had quit the job because Madush had come to the hospital premises and forced her to leave her job. "After that Madush's life took an absolutely different turn. However much I tried to influence him it was in vain". Madush opened the pages of his book as a criminal when he murdered one Kusumadasa in Mawarala itself. But he did not become guilty for the murder. They could not prove accusations against him.

Mahagederawaththa was the area where Gayani's ancestral home was. It was during that period that plans were being drawn to take over lands in the vicinity for an industrial zone. This project was directed by Danny Hiththetiya, a former member of parliament of the said area. He made every influence possible to acquire lands of Madush's wife. That MP's brother in law called Upananda has created all types of trouble to Madush and members of that family. That decisive incident was recalled by his wife Gayani in the presence of senior deputy general of police in the following manner:

"Danny Hiththetiya is our relative ... all these conflicts came into being for land disputes. We told those people several times that to leave us alone ... this is the truth that I am telling you. At that Madush was avoiding them. Even while getting away from their sight ... they created so much trouble to us. Upananda even went to the extent of creating physical harm to Madush.

Life went along amidst these troubles. We got a baby in the year 2001. It was a boy. During the period when we were spending our time with our small baby boy, Madush asked me to go somewhere else and live. But I did not go. We in fact lived in our village and Madush's home in Gathare from time to time.".

However, the aforesaid conflict ended with a series of murders for which Madush was responsible. It is said that a person by the name of Kusumadasa was killed by Madush in the year 2003. But there was no evidence for it. Later Upananda was killed. While in remand prison, after planning, Danny Hiththetiya was murdered. It was with these series of murders that Madush began to dominate the underworld.

"The child was taken to Singapore last August 11th. Now the child is 18 years old. He was in a state of great sickness. That day I went to Singapore for the purpose of taking treatment for my son. Later two people whom I do not know came. After coming to Singapore, took both of us to Dubai. On that journey to Dubai ... I happened to meet Madush". Gayani has met Madush for the last time on that journey to Dubai. What transpired on that day, Gayani told police in the following manner:

"That day Madush told me that he wants the child and to keep him there and go. What can I do? I had to leave the boy in Dubai and come back home empty-handed. I am so sad about my boy. When the child was here, Madush used to speak home from time to time and inquire about son. If not ... Madush never used to speak to me. But as his legal wife I used to used to carry out every duty to relatives on his side. I strived to attend to the funeral of his father. I even participated in almsgivings etcetera. But during the past I never was dependent on him. I lived with my parents with whatever way possible.

The house in which Madush's wife lives in the former's village called Mahagederawaththa, it is surrounded right round with walls. Around the place is surveyed twenty four hours with a CCTV system. No one around ever speaks a word about Madush or his behaviour. Not a word is spoken even whether he has been taken into custody. In reality ... the reason for that is not the love shown by the villagers and colleagues of Madush, but could be the fear.
