UGC announcement with identities of scholars who serve other countries after having studied from public funds ... to pay back the monies

Names and addresses were revealed of a host of junior and senior lecturers who are attached to universities owing post-graduate balance monies were announced in national newspapers by University Grants Commission, covering 4 pages on the matter today (17). They are those who have acquired public funds amounting to millions allocated for education of Sri Lanka as assistance for their post-graduate studies. Most of them are those who are overseas serving those countries after they have secured their degrees. What has been mentioned in the announcement is that they have

expended Rs. 813 million of Sri Lankan public funds and that they are responsible in repaying that money.

The announcement concerned has mentioned names and addresses with figures including the payment to be paid together with interest and the university in which the person was attached to when obtaining the loan too is stated. Shown below is the request made in the announcement.

'Education has been given to you by masses of this country with great toil in order to secure their day to day meals with taxes paid for education from first year to advanced level. It was also from their money that education was given upto the government university degree. Most of you were given Mahapola Scholarship assistance. Credit facilities for your post graduate studies too were given from the monies earned from the blood and sweat of their brow and tears.

After securing those funds you have violated conditions of the bond and have exceeded Rs. 813 million in not meeting those conditions. We are aware that you have become educated persons and spending your time by holding high positions in other countries. We now require the loans that you have secured for the purpose of giving education to the future generation. We believe that you would not turn out to bee a traitor to people in your mother country. Debtors, we kindly request you to promptly settle the above mentioned monies and the interest and thus free yourselves.
