"Tender your resignation immediately!" -- Prime Minister and President inform Inspector General of Police, Pujith Jayasundera
Government sources have reported that President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasingha have informed IGP Pujith Jayasundera to resign from his position within a period of two weeks.
The issue relating to Deputy Inspector General of Police, Nalaka de Silva and subsequently the conduct concerning the IGP were spotlighted in the form of criticisms in that respect both in parliament and also outside. Incidentally it was MP Mr. Vasudeva Nanayakkara who exposed the fact
that DIG Nalaka de Silva who has been accused as being involved in a conspiracy to kill both the President and for minister of defence has visited Kelaniya Temple to conduct a bodhi poojawa on 17th night in the company of the IGP.
Criticisms flared that the IGP is taking the alleged attempt to assassinate the President lightly and instead of a punishment transfer of police, Nalaka de Silva has been transferred to the IT division. By now Nalaka de Silva has been however sent on compulsory leave on recommendations of the police commission and investigations are underway.
Investigations carried out in respect of of a DIG who has been subjected to allegation cannot be conducted impartially under such an IGP. The accused DIG has gone to engage in a bodhi poojawa day-before-yesterday night at Kelaniya Temple in the company of IGP. This then is a strong link. How can investigations be has mentioned in parliament that carried out Mr. Vasudeva Nanayakkara with an IGP like this? "We urge the government to remove the IGP immediately and to proceed with investigations". It was under this background that President - Prime Minister have asked IGP to vacate his position within two weeks.
