Popular youth channel media correspondent who brought one and a half million worth hashish hidden in skating board from Spain ... arrested

A media correspondent who is alleged to have served at a leading youth rupavahini had channel in Sri Lanka had got down a parcel containing a stock of hashish in hiding to the tune of Rs. 1.4 million to this country when customs officers of the Central Mail Exchange had taken the said media correspondent into custody at about 12.30 in the afternoon yesterday (17). The parcel of narcotic

called hashish weighing 1 kilo and 400 grammes was concealed cleverly inside a skating board had been brought down here from Spain. The parcel containing narcotics had been directed to an address of the journalist at Salawa Road, Embuldeniya, Mirihana, Nugegoda. When this recipient had come to the Central Post Exchange yesterday to claim the parcel referred to, he was apprehended by customs officers.

When questioned initially, he had said that he had come because he was informed that a parcel had been sent to him, but that he was not aware as to who had sent it to him and what it contained. However on serious questioning by the customs officers he had let the cat out of the bag and had revealed that the said parcel was directed by a foreigner touring this country whom he had come across in Batticaloa having instructed  him to send the narcotics in this manner.

On further investigations conducted by the police about this journalist it was revealed that he was someone who was apprehended having been found as dealing in narcotics on a number of occasions. In this context it was also exposed that he had got down several parcels containing narcotics on four occasions from abroad in this same manner.

This person who is aged 30 years operates as a freelance journalist at present and prior to this he had served at a leading youth rupavahini channel, it was reported. 

​Customs superintendents, Messrs. Channa Shanthapriya and Lal de Silva​ are conducting further investigations under supervision of Messrs. Preethi Gallage and M.K.H.P. Kumarasiri, deputy directors of customs attached to customs narcotics control unit.
