Mother and daughter die on the spot from Ahangama fatal accident while being escorted for heart operation!
A mother and daughter have died as the result of an accident that took place at Welhengoda along Galle - Matara main road. In the process 2 others have been admitted to Karapitiya Hospital, Ahangama Police say.
A motor car carrying 4 persons had been travelling for the purpose of admitting a mother, a heart patient which vehicle
had crashed against a truck early last morning (6) at Ahangama Kanapela. The mother and daughter, the latter of whom was a nurse at Angunukolapelessa Hospital had died, Ahangama Police say. Police further say that the nurse's husband who sustained injuries in this incident and their two and a half year old daughter were admitted to Karapitiya Hospital. W.A. Dayawathi (58) and Rasika Priyadarshani Abeysiriwardena (28), mother and daughter from Helekada, Angunupelessa are those who have passed away in this manner.
It was revealed at initial police investigations that deceased Dayawathi was on her way to be admitted to Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for purposes of a heart operation when this unfortunate accident has taken place. From the same inquiries it came to be known that at the time of the said accident the husband of deceased Rasika had been driving the vehicle. Immediately after this accident occured at approximately 5.45 in the morning, the villagers had got together and had taken the mother, daughter and small child out of the vehicle and dispatched them to Karapitiya Hospital. However, the villagers have taken great pains for about an hour to extricate the driver of the vehicle who was stuck inside. As the car had crashed right inside the truck, the villagers found it extremely arduous to pull the motor vehicle out. Even foreigners who were lodging in tourist hotels in the area had strived to rescue the driver.
Autopsy of the dead victims was expected to take place yesterday (06) at Karapitiya Hospital. The driver of the tipper was taken into custody and Ahangama Police conduct further investigations.
