Smoke emission test in Sri Lanka ... utter hoax -- Dilantha Malagamuwa

Racing car champion Dilantha Malagamuwa says that there is no standard in the test issued when testing motor vehicle smoke emission tests in the instance of requiring the certificate to renew the vehicle annual revenue license of Sri Lanka. What he says is that instead of focusing attention on checking emission of smoke, the government ought take action to relax taxes on electric vehicles in order to minimise pollution.

"I am totally against the system of pollution test. It's something that does nothing for the sake of
environmental benefit. What happens is that through this method State income increases and there's no decrease in environmental pollution. If scrutinised properly ... 80 per cent of vehicles would fail in this.

In an environmental context, unsuitable and vehicles contributing to vehicle pollution should be developed. In a country like Japan, in addition to this test, police have been deployed on the roads and mobile inspections have been used to detect vehicles emitting smoke. The government should take steps to detect vehicles with excessive emission and to take legal measures in that respect.
