TRC / Telecom investigating about phenomenon of anonymous calls from an overseas telephone number
Telecommunications, Regulations Commission (TRC) and Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) on instructions of Minister of Digital and Infra-structure are engaged in conducting an inquiry regarding a 'missed call' received from an American telephone number by a large number of people who are using mobile phones in Sri Lanka, both day-before-yesterday and yesterday.
In the case of most people the call was cut before answering it and if he or she had tried to call back
to find out what that missed call was for, that person would have to face the consequences of getting connected to service for which a large sum of money was added to the person's telephone bill in such an instance, it was reported.
It would be revealed in the near future as to how data related to the owners of the Sri Lankan telephone numbers were secured. Whether there are local racketeers behind this or whether data available across software such as 'True caller' has been made used of as a base in this connection has come under suspicion. When installing Apps in mobile phones since one's telephone number and numbers of friends appearing in the phone are exposed and thus those being stored into a software thus utilising them in this sort of propagation activities is an action contradictory to the law.
This particular call activity is being operated by a group directed from America or the West Indies, evidence was revealed last evening, it was reported. The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission cautions the public to be vigilant about calls from overseas numbers.
