Leather goods of 9 containers destroyed from Prince Street fire!

Because of a sudden fire which broke out in Prince Street, Pettah yesterday there was a loss of several millions. This fire which broke out has flared up as a result of an electric leak in an establishment-store that housed leading leather goods and was entirely destroyed.

This business by the name of New Oxford Traders is situated in a five-storied building and the fire which broke
out on the third floor had instantly spread because of the fact that the company used to import items such as schoolbags and shoes which incidentally were items that catch fire without any delay.

At the time the establishment was enveloped with fire, 3 persons were trapped on the topmost floor and their lives were however saved because of help of those in the surrounding buildings. Buildings in Prince Street are to a large extent connected to each other and as a result on an occasion such as a fire there is a risk of the fire spreading out. 10 vehicles of the Colombo Fire Brigade were directed to douse the fire in this case. The owner of the business said that goods containing 9 container loads were brought there just 2 days before this tragedy and had been stored there all of which have gone up in flames and totally destroyed. The millions of the loss sustained has still not been estimated.
