How Amaya who tried to do Bio and switched over to Maths ... comes First! -- Stories of Advanced Level winners

According to Advanced Level results of the General Certificate of Education examination, details of some male students and female students who were fortunate in securing Firsts in the whole island are as follows:

First in Bio-science stream -- R.A. Nisal Punsara of Matara Rahula Vidyalaya
His father Mr. R. G.R. Nihal (58) is a Deputy Manager of the Marine Conservation Department of Matara and R.A. Nisal Punsara lives down Kurunduwatta Road, Talpawila. His mother is a Deputy
Manager of Immigration and Emigration Department of the Matara office. His only sister R.A.Y. Hansini (21) is a Second Year student of the Colombo Medical Faculty. His parents had provided the necessary environment for Nisal to carry on his educational activities at home and Nisal has expressed his ideas about his success. Nisal says that he managed to get 8 As and 1B at the Ordinary Level and that he never strained himself unnecessarily by breaking rest in the nights.

First in the Physics stream -- K.D.M. Amaya Dharmasiri of Kurunegala Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya
It is a historical incidence that the First Position of the Advanced Level examination in this country was clinched by a female student in the Bio Science stream. Trouncing other students and achieving First Position in the Bio-science stream as a female student is also another outstanding landmark in the education history of this island. Amaya has also been able to record her name in the record books of her school Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya as the First female student in the island in the Science stream who achieved this success and for becoming the First in the Science stream in the country. Being successful in the island at the Ordinary Level exam in the year 2013 by becoming the Fifth goes to prove Amaya's skill. Further, she has displayed her prowess in the Year 5 scholarship exam too by securing 190 marks.

Amaya Dharmasiri is the younger daughter of Mrs. Geetha Dharmasiri the Chief Deputy Secretary of the North West Local Government while her father Mr. Ananda Dharmasiri serves as the Assistant General Manager of a private institution. Student Amaya's only sister is presently undergoing studies in Year 3 following a special Degree in relation to Chemistry at University of Sri Jayawardenepura.

Amaya had received the sanction of her parents to become a doctor by following Bio-science for about 6 months at the commencement of the Advanced Level. However after switching over to the Maths stream on the guidance of the school she has become successful. She had said that her ambition is to be an Engineer in the future and introduce something new to the world.

First in the Commerce stream -- M.M.A. Muditha Akalanka Rajapaksa of Colombo Ananda College
Muditha has stated that he had acquired this victory as a result of having worked according to a target. What he remarked was that in whatever position he was at the Ordinary Level exam, one could become a distinguished person if he or she thinks of the Advanced Level separately and be dedicated towards it.

This is what he finally said: "What I have to tell Nangi ... Malli is ... you'll must make use of your efforts. Work according to a set plan. You could become the first or instead of that become the tenth or the last. Forget all that. Work according to a target ... thinking that 'I am reaching towards that point.' If that's done ... you can reach a good position".

First in the Arts stream -- R. Indiwari Gavarammana of Kandy, Usas Balika Vidyalaya
Radhini Indhiwari is the daughter of Senior Lecturer Professor Mr. I.B. Gavarammana of the Medical Faculty of the University of Peradeniya and Doctor Rukmali Gavarammana. Radhini Indhiwari is someone who has appeared by offering the subject of French at the Advanced Level exam this year. Radhini who is the eldest in a family comprising of a sister and a brother said that in the future she hopes to become an attorney-at-law.

"Though the Advanced Level exam is somewhat difficult, it should not be considered as a worry for your life. I answered past question papers for the past several years. On some occasions I created questions and answered those myself. At the end of various subjects of the exam I was not sad about the things that I missed. I forgot all those things and got ready for the other subjects. In between periods that I was engaged in studies I spent my time in entertainment things like watching films. Through it, it's possible to grasp a variety of information about other lands. I was able to secure a host of various types of information about other countries which are not available in our country and that by watching films that have won international awards" she said. She also mentioned that she aspires to enter the Law Faculty and get her Degree in Law and in the future to secure some employment with the United Nations Organisation.

First in the Biology Technology stream of studies -- K. Malithi Shashikala Dilrangi of Kegalle Swarna Jayanthi Maha Vidyalaya
Malithi who had her education at schools like Hannagoda Kanishta Vidyalaya and Ranwala Maha Vidyalaya upto the Ordinary Level and later followed her studies at Advanced Level at Swarna Jayanthi Maha Vidyalaya has valued the backing she received from her school for her to become a winner. She says that her mother is a housewife and that her father is employed in a private establishment. She finally said that she was able to be victorious for having worked according to a systematic plan.
